Selfies

Hi guys! Well here’s my first blog post. I asked both the real world and my awesome Facebook world what I should blog about first, and the consensus was my art. And as I’ve been told, my selfie game is quite different from most. Being a photographer this is one venue I have full creative control over. (Full credit goes to Lesley Chang for pointing out that these are in fact “selfies”;)

I’ve always been drawn to emotion driven art, or things very imaginative. I also like doing “covers” of art I like (you will see a couple below). My inspiration is derived mostly from music and movies, I like that cinematic feel to photographs. I’ve never been to photography school, or taken any photography classes, I am self taught. I work with what I know, and if I don’t know it, I figure it out. All I know is what I want my end product to look like, and my imagination is quite vivid and detailed, hence my company name, Vividly by Victoria. Here are some examples of some photographs I purely took for my own enjoyment, and of course to use as my Facebook profile picture 😉

Note: These photos were taken on self timer mode unless otherwise mentioned (yeah, I know, I should get a remote…)

This first picture was inspired from a photograph I came across online. This is one example of “cover art”, where I basically replicated a photograph taken of Lana Del Rey for GQ magazine. I LOVED the sensuality in this photograph. This was taken in my own home, and yes, I used my husband as a prop. However, there is one major difference between the two photographs, which you will see if you look up the original 😉

This photograph was shot purely out of boredom, and to get myself out of a creative rut. I paced my kitchen floor, periodically peering into cupboards trying to think of what I could use. And those boxes of Jello that had been sitting there for what seems like years just seemed to yell right out at me. Some assistance was needed to place the jello around my head, and no, I was not completely submerged into a tub of Jello. Although, I would have much rather preferred that. Next time maybe.

This is a composite shot. It was taken in Indonesia, in my grandmothers house. Basically this shot is made up of 12 different shots. I would love for you to believe that somehow the wind came from nowhere, just up and lifted my randomly tucked together bed sheet dress and flung my hair into the sky. But no. The making of this was actually quite hilarious. The feel I wanted to give however was a ghostly one.

This was also taken in my grandmothers house in one of the bedrooms. This was shot through the screen door that is meant to keep the mosquitoes out, but never does. I remember walking past this room, peering through this door, and noticing the lighting and the feel the room gave off. Immediately an image popped into my head of a woman hiding on the bed, scared, clutching her daughter. So I grabbed my camera. That is my daughter in the pic, I told her to pretend she was scared, and yes, candy was involved.

Another photograph taken out of boredom, whilst in another creative rut. It’s like when I don’t produce something creative once in a while, I feel like a part of me is disappearing. So I do things like this. This is also a composite shot, but of two shots. I climbed a ladder to get the shot of my one hand holding on to the tree, then my wonderful assistant husband would remove the ladder as I hung there with two arms for the shot of my feet dangling. He would then press the shutter for me on the tripod that I had already set up, and then run and catch me before I fell to my ultimate death.

This photograph I think needs no explanation. Robin Thicke. My last name is Kovacs. My husband, yet again a mere sexy prop. This was taken the day I first watched the music video and couldn’t stop dancing. It needed to happen.

My daughter wanted to play princesses one day, so I dressed her up as the princess, myself as the queen, set our royal background, and ……click.

Boredom set in yet again. This was taken very late at night inside my house with a flash. I have copious amounts of grape vines that surround my house in the summer, and with the grapes come these beautiful giant leaves. Took my basket to the deck and started picking, and this is what I ended up with.

Lastly, in the summer at sunset, beautiful light comes in through one of my front windows. This day I was sitting there and a light breeze was coming through, blowing the sheer curtains out gently…it was really pretty. I was a dancer for 11 years as a kid, and I’ve always loved dance. This scene just looked like it needed to be photographed in some form of it, but very pretty, airy, flowing…and the sun, the breeze, it all came together in the end.

  • Tara - Awesome Victoria! I’m so envious of how creative you are :) Looking forward to following your blog

PS I should not have googled the GQ cover at work 😉ReplyCancel
